How to be a PC Strategy Game Player

How to Be a PC Strategy Game Player

Need:
Computer
Internet

Computer games allow you to find joy. Sure, some consider them a waste of time. You play people from across the world—play for nothing really—only to hear people telling you time is passing by. However, isn’t a gaming addiction better than a drug addiction? In my experience, PC strategy games have their own addictive elements. You can play them far longer than the normal first person shooter. You can play online which adds another degree of difficulty. This guide explores how you, the one sitting at the computer, can harness that computer to find some joy—playing PC strategy games like Civilization, Warcraft, Age of Empires, and countless other classics.

Start with the Classics:
I could go on and on about certain series. The best strategy game of all time, on computer or on a gaming console, is Civilization 2. Created by Sid Meier, this particular game was far better—and less buggy—than any of its sequels. However, it’s hard to play Civilization online. That’s where the RTS (real time strategy) game comes into play. The biggest of these types are Age of Empires and Warcraft.

Play Online
To find joy you will need to go beyond playing against the computer. Sure, the computer AI in games like Civilization can be good. But, some of them are horrendous. You’ll get bored fast. You can defeat this. Play strategy games online. Yes, there are dozens of role playing games. But we want strategy games. The best strategy game to play online—in my opinion—is Warcraft 3. This is a free service done by Warcraft creator Blizzard. You can play thousands of other players. Best of all, it matters. You get ranked based on your losses and victories.

Explore the Forgotten Classsics:
Another route you can go is to stop by your local gaming shop, which hopefully sells some old titles, and buy a few new games for a fraction of the new game cost. For example, you might be able to find the classic Master of Orion 2 for $10 or less at a store. Many game publishers put out old copies of games for small prices.

Choose by Reviews:
Gaming reviews are a huge step here. Don’t buy a game if someone says “This game is very buggy” or a bunch of people complain that its boring. Some of the better gaming magazines will provide you top reviews. You can pick up a magazine or go online.

Tip
PC Gamer is one of the top review magazines for games, and always has strategy game reviews.
You can also get demos of games before you buy them.
Another top strategy game is Majesty, a fantasy war game.

Warning:
Civilization 2 may be considered one of the best—or the best—strategy games ever, but its sequels lacked the personal touch. They were buggy, playable, but buggy.
